Adventures in having a toddler

Little man has pretty much dropped his morning nap. If he does have his morning nap, he refuses his afternoon nap. And if I have to choose I prefer he has the afternoon nap. Yesterday morning he really could have used his morning nap. But out of fear of him not sleeping later I decided to deal with a crabby boy in the morning than a crabby boy in the evening.

I wanted to start shopping for clothes for our Christmas photo card. In retrospect I have to say not one of my brightest ideas. I had barely unloaded everything and got out of the car before he had his first fit. We hadn't even made it into the store!! I pick him up and into the store we went. (old navy) While putting him into the cart...another fit. He is usually well mannered when he is well rested, but he went to bed late the night before. (never again if I can help it) I make it over to my section to look at sweaters. He seemed to be doing better. I was getting hopeful. I found a cute sweater and proceeded to his section.

Up until this point I had not found a costume for the fall festival for little man. They were having a sale and I found one that was cute but I was unsure about the size. He would have to try it on...*gulp* I placed it in the cart and went to go look at a few pants that were on sale. Again I was unsure about the size. He is so tiny in the waist but long legged. So I grabbed two sizes of pants knowing he would have to try them on. I also found a fleece pull over on sale and a few shirts. While walking through his sections he was pulling stuff off the shelves and racks onto the floor. In the Old Navy carts the kids sit up at the front of the cart which made it difficult to stop him.

I had found everything I needed and walked over to the fitting rooms. While I was walking I was praying. I was praying for patience and a happy heart no matter what battle was about to go down in the dressing room. I unloaded everything into the dressing room, looked at little man, took a long sigh and took him out of the cart.

I kid you not the second I closed the door of the dressing room he threw himself on the floor crying. I wanted to do the same thing but I picked him up calmly and proceeded to try on clothes. I'm not going to sugar coat it, it was bad. The sales lady kept knocking on the door to make sure I was ok. She was a mom, she understood.

Halfway through I pulled out his snacks. I usually have them in a container that is spill proof but it was in the dishwasher so they were just in a ziploc baggie. While I was trying to situate the clothes and find the next thing to be tried on I heard something spill on the floor. Yep, he spilled his crackers all over the floor. I picked them up and had no where to put them but in an empty pocket in his diaper bag. I didn't want to stick them back in the baggie because there were some that hadn't spilled on the floor. I still pressed forward. I placed the pull over on him. As soon as I did he sneezed and the mouth full of crackers went all over it. I took it off and placed it in the "buying it" pile.

I took a breath. We only had one more item to try on, the costume. I had no idea how this was going to go. He cried the entire time I was putting it on him. But the second he caught a glance of himself in the mirror he calmed down and wouldn't stop looking at himself. It was hilarious!!

(Sorry for the poor quality. This was taken with my phone.)

So we have found little man's costume for the fall festival. And we did make it out of the store alive. I had lunch plans but canceled because little man needed some sleep! After his nap he woke up with a new attitude! Being a mom is hard but so rewarding.

  10. I remember when my girls stopped taking their morning nap. I just moved it to Noon. Then 1pm then 2pm. Actually, nap time evolved over the years and we just evolved with it. Luckily my two girls kept taking naps until Kindergarten. They didn't always sleep but they had to have quiet time in their room for one hour and about 80% of the time, they fell asleep.

Yep, Mommy needs that quiet time! :)
